Individually or in teams, record 1-hour news broadcasts from several different sources, preferably at the same time (so you can compare the stories reported). You might record the major broadcast or cable networks, like ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, Fox, CNN, MSNBC, and others.
Now, systematically study the first, second, and third personae created by each interaction between text and reader. For instance, who does CNN say they are, and how does that differ from who the Financial News Network says they are (first persona)? Who do the major networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC say that you are in comparison with the implied reader of public television news broadcasts (second persona)? Do any of the broadcasts have a strong sense of who a third party is, some other group or entity who is not you and not the broadcaster (third persona)? You might especially find third personae suggested by Lou Dobbs on CNN or by Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.
Think about the creation of first, second, and third personae as an important part of the work of each text. Ask yourself what the long-term effect would be in terms of how people thought of themselves, of news organizations, and of other people and groups if people regularly followed one network or another for the news.
